The Maybank story

Maybank Indonesia traces its roots from PT Bank Internasional Indonesia Tbk which began its operations in 1959. The bank became a publicly listed company in Indonesia in 1989, after obtaining a license as a foreign exchange bank in 1988. The company officially became a subsidiary of Malaysian banking institution Maybank in 2008.

Maybank acquired 97.5 per cent of the company’s shares through a wholly-owned subsidiary, Mayban Offshore Corporate Services (Labuan) Sdn Bhd. A name change shortly followed after the acquisition. Maybank Indonesia has expanded to become one of the biggest banks in Indonesia with more than 400 local branches and two overseas branches in India and Mauritius. As of 2018, the company recorded IDR177.5 trillion of assets.

The recruitment process

The application process for the Management Development Programme (MDP) can take four weeks on average for college or university applicants. An HR representative may conduct an on-field assessment before you can take a four-part online test. There might be another in-person interview with the HR manager.

The screening for prospective management trainees can be quite tedious, as approximately 30 people fail to move on to the next phase. You should expect three stages comprising group interviews, a series of tests and an individual interview. The process may occur within just one day.

Career prospects

Maybank Indonesia offers four programmes for fresh graduates and students. Those who are inclined to work in the IT, SME business lines, Commercial or Consumer Maybank sectors should join MDP. Students should have a minimum GPA of 2.75 and must be at least three months away from finishing their degree.

The Talent Marketing Programme allows recent graduates to learn more about Maybank Indonesia’s marketing strategies for products and services. They must also have a minimum GPA of 2.75. If you like a customer-facing role, the Talent Service Programme provides learning and work opportunities as a front-liner in the company.

Graduates who dream of working overseas can do so when they join the two-year Global Maybank Apprentice Programme (GMAP). The company may assign a six-month work placement at the headquarters in Malaysia. You must have a minimum GPA of 3.00 on a scale of 4.00 and English fluency based on a score of 500 for TOEFL/EPT.

Remuneration

Interns at Maybank Indonesia earn between IDR1,550 and IDR1,700 per month. A management associate’s monthly average salary ranges from IDR8,500 to IDR9,000. The monthly average salary for commercial banking officers varies from IDR7,500 to IDR8,100.

Employees receive standard benefits including healthcare insurance. Most of them feel satisfied with their salaries, but managers perceive their pay to be quite low. Senior managers, for instance, earn an average of IDR17,540 to IDR19,200 per month.

The culture

Maybank Indonesia has joined HR Asia Magazine’s list of the Best Companies To Work For In Asia for four years. The distinction has manifested through entry-level employees’ satisfaction with their salaries and friendly colleagues. Some people have worked in Maybank for more than 10 years despite the low salary increment, possibly because of the conducive and healthy work environment.

The company provides fresh graduates with different areas where they can build their careers: in ‘Business Function’ and as ‘Business Enablers’. Maybank Indonesia divides the Business Function into community distribution, community financial services and global banking departments. Business Enablers work in the following areas:

  • Corporate Communications & Branding
  • Finance
  • Human Capital
  • Information Technology
  • Internal Audit
  • Legal, Compliance & Corporate Secretary
  • National Anti-Fraud
  • Operations
  • Risk Management
  • Sharia Banking
  • Strategic Planning & Project Management Office

The competition

The company’s biggest competitors are Bank BTPN, PT Bank Central Asia Tbk, PT Bank CIMB Niaga Tbk, PT Bank Rakyat Indonesia (Persero) Tbk, PT Bank Mandiri (Persero) Tbk, PT Bank Negara Indonesia (Persero) Tbk, PT Bank OCBC NISP Tbk, PT Bank Tabungan Negara (Persero) Tbk and Panin Bank.

Social contributions

Maybank Indonesia focuses on community, environment, marketplace and workplace as the four guiding principles of their corporate social responsibility projects. These are further categorised into projects about community empowerment, education, environment, preservation of art and culture, and supporting a healthy lifestyle.

The vibe of the place

Graduates will not struggle to apply for an internship or training programmes at Maybank Indonesia. The company’s several awards for workplace culture and practices should indicate their status as one of the best employers in Indonesia. You should prepare for long work hours, especially if you join GMAP. A promotion also doesn't guarantee a significantly higher pay at Maybank Indonesia.
