The Bachelor of Media offers students a flexible and forward-looking approach to the converging fields of film, radio, television and new media. In core subjects students develop strong foundations in the creative use of media, gain a critical understanding of the role of media in social and cultural life and knowledge of the operation and regulation of the media. Students develop skills in collaborative productions for small and big screens, radio and audio design and digital media. Opportunities are also available to gain skills in screenwriting, project development and the creative use of media technologies. In addition to critical reflection and innovative practice, the program offers a stimulating selection of elective subjects that equip graduates with the flexibility, knowledge and skills to pursue a variety of career paths. The Bachelor of Media recognises the diverse career paths open to graduates by preparing them for employment in a broad range of media-making, across different platforms and industries. Graduates work in print, radio and television production, in corporate communications, media consultancies, internet related industries and in teaching. The first year of the Bachelor of Media also provides a flexible pathway to the Bachelor of Creative Arts and the Bachelor of Arts majors in Media, and Creative Arts depending on availability of places in those degrees. Students are selected into Honours at the end of their third year. The principle requirement for selection is consistently high performance (normally at least a B+ average) in Media subjects and, in particular, distinction in third-year media subjects. Prospective students should make their interest known to the Media Honours Coordinator by early June for commencement in second semester, or November for commencement in first semester. Honours candidates are expected to undertake preliminary reading and writing in the break that precedes their initial enrolment.
