About this scholarship

A PhD scholarship is available for candidates interested in a fast growing area of advanced functional materials and low emission technologies for the production of greener products.

The project will focus on the thematic area of developing advanced functional materials for the production of greener products.

Future energy needs and their potential economic, environmental, and ultimately societal impacts have been the source of intense public debate.

Similarly, the chemical industry faces a similar challenge in identifying new feed sources to meet projected global growth. This growth will demand new and greener feedstocks and technologies.

The thematic research that Dr. Chiang is leading aims to develop possible new sources of carbon that could help us meet projected growth in the chemical industry.

Technologies under consideration include:

  • innovative catalyst technologies and sustainable catalytic processes
  • novel reactor concepts that enable process modularisation and intensification
  • low emission technologies for the production of greener products
  • conversion of waste (e.g. CO2 and biomass) to higher value products such as synthetic fuels and chemicals
  • solar energy-to-chemicals technologies

The PhD candidate will undertake cutting-edge research to develop advanced functional materials that can be applied in one of the above key strategic areas.

The project will involve joint research with other universities as well as CSIRO, and the multi-disciplinary nature of the project will provide good opportunities to enhance both technical and industry networking skills of the candidate.

The candidate will be located in Melbourne.

Value and duration

Up to $30,000 per annum for up to 3.5 years (full time).

Candidates with backgrounds in chemical engineering or chemistry are encouraged to apply. However, candidates with excellent performance in other fields will also be considered.

To be eligible for this scholarship you must:

  • be an Australian citizen, Australian permanent resident or a self-funded international student
  • have a first class honours or 2A honours or equivalent in a relevant discipline of science or engineering, or a Masters by research degree
  • provide evidence of good oral and written communication skills
  • demonstrate the ability to work as part of a multi-disciplinary research team
  • meet RMIT’s entry requirements for the Doctor of Philosophy.
