About this course

The Bachelor of Science (Extended) (Health) is a four-year degree for Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander students to undertake studies in an academically and culturally supported environment.

It provides students with an opportunity to explore the breadth of health, and tailor their study pattern to specialise in that interest them, as well as knowledge of culture and practice.

Health is one of Australia's fastest growing employment sectors. Graduates who have a holistic understanding of health and how healthcare works in Australia and internationally are in high demand.

The degree equips students with excellent communication, critical and analytical skills, with built-in support and academic skills development to ensure your success.

You will begin study with a cohort of students engaged in culturally relevant literacy and mathematics studies and other available units.

As part of this program, you will have access to tailored academic support and tutors, mentors through our Mentoring our Brothers and Sisters (MOBS) program, with a wide-range of course and residential scholarships available.

Why study with us?
  • This degree gives you the flexibility to explore the breadth of health, and tailor your study pattern to specialise in the areas of health that you are interested in.
  • We offer an increased number of units of study that address different areas of health such as e-health, indigenous health, health promotion, and ageing and health. You will have more project-based learning and work collaboratively with other students and health organisations.
  • In response to our changing healthcare system, we have increased your opportunities to engage with industry. You will interview health professionals and people with lived experiences in your classrooms, and network with our alumni from healthcare, commercial, government, and not-for-profit organisations at extra-curricular events and mentoring.
  • You will graduate with the ability to navigate the complexity of health in different sociocultural, political and economic contexts, along with skills in critical thinking, complex problem solving, communication and empathy.

You will complete a major in Health with core units in areas such as health and society, introduction to healthcare and eHealth, ensuring you gain comprehensive knowledge of healthcare and its latest developments. As you progress through the health major you will be able to specialise in areas of interest (e.g. health, ethics and the law, international health or health policy).

A second major can be taken from the shared pool of majors or from those offered in the Bachelor of Science, which are offered through the Faculty of Science academic schools:

  • School of Chemistry
  • School of Geosciences (including Geography and Geology and Geophysics)
  • School of History and Philosophy of Science
