About this course

The Bachelor of Laws/Bachelor of Arts is a five year combined degree providing an accredited professional qualification in Law as well as a degree in Arts. The program offers an innovative, high quality legal education with a global and social justice perspective and a real emphasis on hands-on experiences. It includes all the compulsory Law subjects required by the Victorian Legal Admissions Board for admission to the legal profession as an Australian lawyer in Victoria and a wide range of Law electives, many with a practical skills component, such as advocacy and negotiation. There are also a number of Clinical Legal Education subjects on offer. Students can select a Major from among a wide range of Disciplines, including some languages, Philosophy and the Performing Arts. If they wish, students can also complete Law electives that complement their Arts specialisation. For example, a student who majors in Politics might complete Law electives such as Public International Law, Human Rights Law or Justice Rights and the Law. The course is available at both Melbourne and Bendigo Campuses.  Students wishing to study Bachelor of Laws/Arts at the Melbourne campus see this Handbook entry for Bachelor of Laws/Bachelor of Arts LWLAT Melbourne. At Bendigo, law lectures are normally provided online with face-to-face tutorials or seminars.  Some law electives are also available in intensive delivery at Melbourne during the Summer and Winter semesters. The three Essentials - Global Citizenship, Innovation and Entrepreneurship and Sustainability Thinking - are specialist areas designed to give you an edge with employers. They will enable you to adapt your knowledge and skills to new contexts in a rapidly changing world. Subjects addressing the Essentials are part of all undergraduate La Trobe degrees and can be identified in the subject database by distinct icons.   The list of approved subjects is also on the Essentials webpage.
