About this course

This is a five year combined degree providing an accredited professional qualification in Law as well as a degree in International Relations. The program offers an innovative, high-quality legal education with a global and social justice perspective and a real emphasis on hands-on experiences. It includes all the compulsory Law subjects required by the Victorian Law Admissions Board for admission to the legal profession in Victoria and a wide range of Law electives, including subjects complementary to International Relations such as Human Rights Law and Public International Law. The Bachelor of International Relations gives you a comprehensive understanding of the political, strategic, economic, cultural, legal and organisational dynamics that shape international affairs. It is taught by passionate academics with extensive experience in policy development and implementation and aims to prepare students for a career in a globalised economy. You can start to specialise in subjects related to a specific geographic region (e. g. Europe or Asia) or a particular field (e. g. diplomacy of economics, environmental politics, security or conflict resolution. Subject to approval, students may also complete a work-integrated learning subject, Professional Competency in Transition to the Workplace, which allows placement in an Australian government or non-government organisation. This double degree will provide you with the skills to work with organisations within international politics or as a lawyer in the public, private or community sector. The three Essentials - Global Citizenship, Innovation and Entrepreneurship and Sustainability Thinking - are specialist areas designed to give you an edge with employers. They will enable you to adapt your knowledge and skills to new contexts in a rapidly changing world. Subjects addressing the Essentials are part of all undergraduate La Trobe degrees and can be identified in the subject database by distinct icons.  The list of approved subjects is also on the Essentials webpage.
