Myles

I completed two rotations in areas that I may have never considered working in prior to beginning the program, both of which have provided me with extensive opportunities for professional development.

What's your role in the department?

I am currently working in the HR Workforce Planning and Analytics Team. Within the team, I am involved in several activities including delivering the annual employee census, workforce deep dives into a range of HR initiatives, and developing dashboards on the department’s workforce mix.

My day-to-day work supports senior executive decision-making surrounding the future of our work. The work is very rewarding and gives me the opportunity to see my efforts implemented across the department.

What's been the highlight of your experience in the Graduate Program?

I have had so many highlights over the course of my graduate year at the department, of these several experiences stand out as my personal favourites. The wide array of learning opportunities that I had over the course of the program would have to be my number one highlight. This included the Graduate Certificate in Public Administration at the University of Canberra and the formal training that was provided to me within my own team. Participating in these learning and development programs provided me with the opportunity to connect with my peers and senior leaders across the APS, whilst developing a strong professional network.

Other highlights include graduate fundraising, through selling chocolates, hosting happy hours, and facilitating the department’s trivia night.  Fundraising activities really brought our graduate cohort together and as a result, I made a great new group of friends here in Canberra.

My final highlight would be the diverse range of work that you will be able to influence and participate in. Within my own graduate year, I completed two rotations in areas that I may have never considered working in prior to beginning the program, both of which have provided me with extensive opportunities for professional development.

What tips do you have for future grads considering the Education program?

My number one tip for graduates considering the program would be to step out of your comfort zone and be open to new opportunities. Whether this be in relation to the work you do (e.g. working in an area that you may not be familiar with) or socially (attending events with your peers).  The program provides graduates with the opportunity to do both. I personally received the most enjoyment out of the activities that were initially outside of my comfort zone.
