This role gives me the opportunity to take ownership of projects and certain functions which is not normally seen in traditional companies.

What's your job about?

Since the company’s founding in 2013 in Germany, Emma has grown to be a global sleep brand selling award winning mattresses, beds, pillows, and other accessories. With my job, I handle supply chain operations, more specifically on the warehouse-to-delivery end of the supply chain line of Emma’s Southeast Asian markets. That means that I handle or at the very least have visibility on everything that goes on with warehouse operations. These are tasks ranging from assisting in receiving inventory shipments to overseeing the daily operations of our warehouses and working with customer excellence on delivery and returns concerns and processes. In addition, I also work on projects that centres on optimizing operational and logistics processes with different stakeholders, as well as projects focusing on the execution of various value-adding services that differ per market.

What's your background?

I grew up in the province of Batangas for most of my life, then moved to Manila when I was 16 to pursue my Senior High School education. Growing up I was never hindered by the fact that I was raised in the province, largely due to my parents raising me to always dream big. This led me to become both an academic achiever and student performer back in high school and influenced me to become an active student leader in college. With the recent conclusion of my stint as a DLSU student leader, I was able to contribute my skills and expertise in project management to a total of 30 projects across my multiple organizations in the university. Doing this for the past four years truly honed my pre-professional experience and combined with the multiple personal and professional connections I have made over the years led me to pursue internships and work opportunities alongside my continuing education.

It is because of those university connections that made me discover Emma – the Sleep Company last 2021 after the conclusion of my former role as a Project Manager in another company. Since then, I have been working with Emma since February 2021, having had the opportunity to work in two different roles throughout my stay so far. I worked my first six months in the company with a role in Order Management, after which I was given the opportunity to work in Supply Chain, a role I still enjoy to date.

Could someone with a different background do your job?

Yes, mainly because I am someone who does not necessarily have the “correct educational background” for this role yet got the opportunity to do so. With my degree, I am expected to work in either a corporate finance role or a governmental economic-adjacent career. But because of the skillset I was able to learn during my active college years, it helped me achieve a blooming career in the industry that I wanted in. With this, I can see other skill-diverse individuals who are eager to learn and grow not only attain the job that I do but thrive in this role as well.

What's the coolest thing about your job?

What I absolutely love about my job is the work environment. In my experience so far, Emma prides itself on having a fun and collaborative work environment that supports employee’s growth through its regular workshops and training sessions while also looking over employee’s personal welfare with various engagement activities, interest clubs, and social gatherings. I found that this combination greatly contributes to my eagerness to not only do my job well, but to stay in the company for as long as I can to help jumpstart my professional career. In addition, this role gives me the opportunity to take ownership of projects and certain functions which is not normally seen in traditional companies.

What are the limitations of your job?

Working in supply chain, I do find the aspect of having to be on standby or sometimes on call for issues, if necessary, during weekends or holidays challenging. In addition, there are a lot of moving parts when you analyze the end-to-end of the supply chain line – which can get overwhelming at times. This leads to moments of mental and even physical exhaustion especially during peak season.

3 pieces of advice for yourself when you were a student...

  • Understand that true growth comes from the low points in life, not the highs.
  • The world is your oyster; you are in a place to take the opportunities life has to offer.
  • Never underestimate what you can do; but always be humble and kind.
